Paul Di Palma

SLAMDANCE FILM FESTIVAL 2007

Exclusive Interview with Paul Di Palma, Director of Short Film

La Jaula Del Monarca (A Monarch Cage)

Luis: Please give us a brief description of your film La Jaula Del Monarca

(A Monarch Cage)?

free web stats Paul Di Palma: La Jaula Del Monarca (A Monarch Cage), is about limitations. How people react to the roadblocks and challenges that come up in life. I wrote the script at a point in my life where I was working Construction everyday, had no girl, and was pretty much stuck in a rut.

Luis: Do you feel the your story is relevant to the situations we have today?

Paul Di Palma: I don't really know how relevant the story is to situations we
face today. I think it encompasses human conditions, but I can't
translate that to a current situation.

Luis: For you, who do you think is the target audience for your film and why?

Paul Di Palma: I made this film with myself in mind, so I guess it's for people
like me, who are not me.

Luis: Where did you shoot your film and describe to us your experience shooting at a location?

Paul Di Palma: I shot the film in Mexico City, Mexico. It was difficult, but making a film is difficult in general. I went to Mexico because I had a very good friend, Arturo Núñez, living there, and he had recently shot a short film. He was going to help me find a crew and cast. Some people where fantastic. They treated me with respect, and did above and beyond what was asked of them. Others saw me as someone they can try to exploit because I was from the U.S., and most likely A rich, spoiled, sucker.

Luis: I always ask filmmakers about the upcoming Oscars:
Which among the films this year are your favorite Oscar contenders?

Paul Di Palma: I thought the Departed was good, and Apacolypto is a fun movie. The under water birth is priceless! Besides those two I rarely see
movies in theatres, so I am always out of loop when it is Oscar time.
So I couldn't tell you what the best performance of the year was or
best picture.

Luis: What to you is your ultimate favorite film?

Paul Di Palma: I know it is cliché, but I don't care! 8 ½

Luis: What words of wisdom do you have for filmmakers who would like to be
in Slamdance Film Festival in the future?

Paul Di Palma: Make a film about something you are really interested in because ou will be spending a lot of time with the subject matter. If you
really love what you are doing it will come through in the film, and
be noticed by Slamdance.
